India and Pakistan Exchange Fire After Deadly Kashmir Attack

Gunfire Along the Border

Indian and Pakistani forces have exchanged gunfire along the Line of Control (LoC) — the heavily guarded border that divides the disputed region of Kashmir. The United Nations (UN) has called for both countries to show “maximum restraint” to avoid further military conflict. This comes just days after a deadly attack in the town of Pahalgam, located in Indian-administered Kashmir.

India and Pakistan have started shooting at each other along the Line of Control, which is the border between the two parts of Kashmir. This happened after a deadly attack in a town called Pahalgam in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where 26 people were killed. The United Nations has asked both countries to stay calm and not let the situation get worse.

Kashmir has been a problem between India and Pakistan since 1947, when both countries became independent. Each country controls part of Kashmir, but both say the whole region belongs to them. Because of this, there have been many fights and even wars between them over the years.

The Indian army said that Pakistan started the shooting. A Pakistani official confirmed that gunfire was exchanged, but didn’t say who started it. Thankfully, no civilians were hurt during the shooting.

In another place called Bandipora, two people were injured during a different shooting. All of this happened just a few days after the attack in Pahalgam, which is one of the worst attacks in the area in 25 years.

A group called The Resistance Front said they were behind the Pahalgam attack. This group is believed to be linked to a banned Pakistani militant group called Lashkar-e-Taiba. India says these are terrorists, and the United Nations also considers them a terrorist group.

Indian police are now offering a reward of 2 million rupees (about $23,500) for any information that helps catch the three suspects. Police and security forces have arrested and are questioning many people who might be connected to the attack. Security has also been made tighter in the region.

The attack has made things worse between India and Pakistan. India has pulled out of a water-sharing agreement called the Indus Waters Treaty. In return, Pakistan has stopped working on a canal project and has closed its airspace to Indian planes. These actions show that relations between the two countries are now worse than they have been in many years.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, said his country had nothing to do with the attack. He said blaming Pakistan will not fix the real issue in Kashmir and said it is very hard for armed people to cross the border because it is so well guarded.

India’s army chief visited the attack site to check security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the attackers will be found and punished no matter where they hide. Reporters in Kashmir say that security is now very strict, and the media is being watched more closely. Many people are afraid and worried that more violence could happen.

Pakistan has said it will protect itself if India tries to attack. A government spokesperson said Pakistan wants peace but will not allow anyone to harm its safety or pride.
